Clean & Jerk

What Is a Clean & Jerk — and Why Would Anyone Want to Do One?

If you’ve been around CrossFit Structure for any length of time, you’ve probably seen someone doing a clean & jerk and thought one of two things: that looks impressive – or – that looks terrifying.

Probably both.

Here’s the thing. The clean and jerk is one of the two lifts contested at the Olympics. It’s also one of the most complete, effective, and genuinely satisfying movements you can learn in the gym. And this July, Keaton – our Olympic lifting expert – is running a dedicated clinic to help you actually understand it.

But first, let’s demystify what it actually is.

So, what is it?

The clean and jerk is two movements in one. The clean takes the bar from the floor up to your shoulders. The jerk takes it from your shoulders to overhead. Put them together and you’ve got a full-body movement that works pretty much everything – legs, hips, back, core, shoulders – all in one go.

It sounds complex. It is, a little. But that’s also the point.

Why bother learning it?

Because it makes you genuinely athletic in a way that a treadmill never will.

The clean and jerk develops power, speed, coordination, strength and balance, all at once. It teaches your body to move efficiently under load, which transfers to everything: lifting the kids, carrying shopping, moving furniture without throwing your back out.

It’s also brilliant for cardio. Done with a lighter weight for higher reps, it has similar cardiovascular demands to an 800m run, because the bar travels so far, so fast. So if you’ve ever felt like lifting weights and getting a decent sweat are mutually exclusive, this movement will change your mind.

“But I’ve never touched a barbell”

Good. You’re exactly who this clinic is for.

One of the brilliant things about the clean and jerk is that it can be learned from scratch, with a PVC pipe, a light training bar, or dumbbells, in a single session. You don’t need to be strong to start. You need good coaching and the willingness to turn up.

Keaton has coached this movement to complete beginners more times than she can count. She knows where people get stuck, what tends to go wrong, and how to break it down in a way that actually makes sense. You will leave the clinic understanding the movement, and you might surprise yourself.

The July Clinic

This is a small-group, focused session designed to take you through the clean and jerk properly. Whether you’ve never done it before or you’ve been doing it for a while and want to iron out the technique, this is your chance to get proper eyes on your movement.

Spaces will be limited, because that’s the point. Less people, more coaching, more reps.
