Do I Need to Be Fit to Start CrossFit?

CrossFit

One of the biggest concerns we hear from people considering CrossFit is that they think they aren’t fit enough to start. They’re worried about keeping up with what’s written on the board or about not being able to match the pace of others in the class. But here’s the truth: there is ZERO fitness requirement to start CrossFit.

At CrossFit Structure, we meet you exactly where you are in your fitness journey. Our coaches will modify the workout to suit your current fitness level, ensuring that you finish around the same time as everyone else. In fact, most people in class will be scaling or adjusting something in their workout to suit their needs and to get the proper stimulus.

We’ve worked with individuals with a range of conditions, including chronic pain, fibromyalgia, anxiety, depression, diabetes, and more. We believe that when done correctly, CrossFit will help you become a better, stronger, and healthier version of yourself. All you need to do is take that first step, and we’ll guide you the rest of the way.

Our Process: From Day One to Your First Class

At CrossFit Structure, we’ve created a simple and supportive process to help you get started. Here’s what you can expect:

Step 1: The No Sweat Introduction

Your CrossFit journey begins with a No Sweat Introduction. This is a relaxed, no-pressure meeting where you’ll get to know us and the gym—and don’t worry, there’s no workout involved! During this time, we’ll give you a tour, introduce you to some of our coaches or members who may be around, and then talk about how we can help you.

We’ll also discuss:

  • Your past training history (if any)
  • Any previous or current injuries
  • Your current nutrition and sleep habits
  • Your personal fitness goals

The more we learn about you, the better we can tailor a plan that fits your needs. After this, we’ll present different membership options based on your schedule and preferences.

Step 2: The Onboarding Process

No matter your fitness level, everyone who joins CrossFit Structure goes through our comprehensive onboarding process. This includes one-on-one sessions with our experienced coaches to ensure that you:

  • Move safely and effectively
  • Learn proper techniques
  • Build confidence before entering group classes

We move at your pace, and some members choose to keep one-on-one sessions going even after the onboarding process. Whether you prefer to ease into group classes, focus on specific weaknesses, or stick to private training, we’re here to support you.

During onboarding, you’ll cover the basics of:

  • Gymnastics (bodyweight movements)
  • Olympic weightlifting
  • Powerlifting
  • Cardio machines and their proper use

We pride ourselves on paying attention to the small details of movement to help you get the most out of your workout and prevent injury. Even if you’ve done CrossFit for years, we guarantee you’ll learn something new from our coaches.

Step 3: Group Classes and Your Ongoing Journey

After onboarding, you’ll have the option to:

  • Continue with one-on-one sessions
  • Join our CrossFit group classes
  • Do a mix of both!

When you join a class, our coaches will make sure you’re getting the correct stimulus for the workout posted on the board. At the start of each class, we’ll go over the workout in a brief session, warm up together, and then dive deeper into technique.

If you’re not ready for a specific movement, that’s okay—we’ll provide variations and scaled options so you can safely achieve the desired results. You’ll never be asked to lift weight you’re not prepared for or attempt movements you’re not ready for.

After the workout, you’ll feel the camaraderie of the group, with high fives all around. Then we’ll cool down together and end the class right on time.

We’re Here for You Every Step of the Way

Once you’ve settled into your routine, we’ll check in with you every three months to ensure you’re progressing toward your goals. If you’re not seeing the results you’re after, we’ll work with you to adjust your plan. If you’re thriving, we might even ask to share your story to inspire others!

Remember, you do not need to be fit to start CrossFit. Our job as coaches is to keep you safe and guide you toward the results you want. All we ask is that you show up ready to be coachable and open to our guidance.
