The Importance of Keeping Kids Active

Kids

As parents, we know how important it is to keep our kids active. Speaking from my own experience raising little boys, I’ve noticed a direct connection between their activity levels and their mood. When they don’t move enough, they’re grumpy, whiny (even more than usual!), and not the easiest humans to be around.

Our eldest has especially shown us how crucial movement is for his ability to learn and concentrate. In a traditional school environment—sitting indoors for long periods—his focus and enthusiasm for learning dropped dramatically. This led us to move him to a more progressive school that incorporates outdoor learning and forest school activities into the curriculum. The change has been incredible. While many factors influenced our decision, the improvement in his behaviour and learning has been nothing short of amazing.

The Stats Are Clear—and Concerning

Here are some eye-opening numbers from the World Health Organization and the Health Survey for England:

  • In 2022, around one in seven children (15%) aged 2-15 were obese.
    • 12% of children aged 2-10 were obese.
    • 19% of children aged 11-15 were obese.
  • Among adults, 64% were overweight or obese, including 29% who were obese.
  • Men were more likely to be classified as overweight or obese (67%) than women (61%).

The troubling reality is that children who are overweight or obese are far more likely to become inactive, overweight adults. That’s why getting kids active and healthy early on is critical.

How CrossFit Can Help

To be honest, it doesn’t have to be CrossFit. Any club or activity that gets kids moving and keeps them engaged is a win. However, CrossFit stands out because of the same reasons it’s great for adults: it’s fun, varied, and challenges participants in unique ways.

What to Look for in a Kids’ Activity Club

When choosing an activity for your kids, keep these points in mind:

  1. Quality Interaction:
Kids thrive when they connect with others—whether it’s a parent, coach, or teammates. Activities need to foster these connections. Working out alone on a video game won’t cut it.
  2. Fun:
Play is key. Whether it’s through games, challenges, or competitions, the activity should feel more like fun than work. If kids don’t enjoy it, they won’t stick with it.
  3. Reward:
Positive reinforcement is crucial. You don’t need to bribe them to exercise, but pair their activity with something fun afterwards. Make it a routine they look forward to.
  4. Frequent Change:
Variety keeps kids engaged. Whether it’s meeting new challenges every session or switching up activities, kids are less likely to lose interest when things are fresh and exciting.
  5. Challenge:
Kids love being told, “This is tough, but I think you can do it!” It builds confidence and gives them a sense of accomplishment.

Is CrossFit Safe for Kids?

Absolutely! Just like our adult classes, CrossFit kids is coach-led and safety-focused.

  • CrossFit Tots (Ages 4-6):
These classes are play-based, where kids work on skills without even realizing it. For example, if I ask them to sprint, they might groan. But if I say, “Run as fast as a cheetah!” they’re off in a flash.
  • CrossFit Kids (Ages 7-16):
Here, it’s a bit more structured, but we still incorporate games. When weights are introduced, the coach carefully assigns appropriate weights to ensure safety. Pre-teens typically stick to light dumbbells or bodyweight exercises.
  • Many of our teens are stronger than some adults! But even for them, our coaches adjust weights and movements to keep things safe and injury-free.

The Long-Term Benefits of Kids Doing CrossFit

One of the best things about getting kids into CrossFit is the foundation it builds for their future. When they grow up and move away to university or start their adult lives, they’ll have the tools to stay active and healthy. Unlike some school sports or clubs that don’t continue after leaving school, CrossFit is accessible worldwide. Wherever they go, there’s likely a CrossFit gym nearby.

Plus, kids love emulating their parents. If you’re active and eat well, your kids are more likely to follow your lead.
