Summer Training Success: Tips for Staying Motivated

Summer holiday training
Does your routine completely disappear during the summer?

Whether it is the kids being off for 6 weeks or 2 weeks in the Bahamas we all have struggles staying on track during the holidays.

Here are a few tips to help you stay on track;

1. Adjust your goals and your mindset to help you get through the summer

First start with your goals, realistically what do you want to achieve by the end of August?  Do you just want to maintain where you are at, which is no mean feat or do you have something specific you want to achieve? Strict pull-ups are a common goal, double unders are another, maybe you just want to be stronger. Just find what goal is the one for you. Once we know the goal we can look at how we will achieve it.

If we are looking at maintenance, for most this will mean 3 classes a week, so think about where you are going to fit them in. So, for example, maybe you can’t drop the kids off and hit the 9.30 am class – but could you make a 7 am or 6.30 pm class instead? And of course, this change is difficult as no one likes change but its only 6 weeks until the kids are back at school and we can dive straight back into our favourite classes.

2. Don’t stress over a missed workout

During busy times, it happens, but it’s ok. Life and family needs make getting to the gym hard! 1 or 2 missed workouts are not the end of the world. What we need to think about is consistency and the best way to achieve it, particularly during busy and stressful times. If you are away from the gym for holidays, work, or just don’t have the time to make it in. Email us at [email protected] – while you have a recurring membership with us we will send you home/hotel gym workouts to help you stay consistent!

3. Eat, drink and be merry

While eating and drinking with little or no thought as to what this is doing for your body in the long run is not a good idea and will not end well……Taking a break to enjoy a meal or a drink (or both) is ok and should be enjoyed without feeling guilty. Many regular gym goers experience this however life is to be lived and 1 week away enjoying a meal that you don’t have to cook or do the washing up should be a pleasure. We are here to help, if you want and as noted above, we will provide holiday workouts and when you return we will help you get back on track.

It’s important to remember it’s what we do for the majority of our time that makes the difference, not 1 week holiday slip, so enjoy it!

4. Take time for yourself

This can look very different for everyone, however, if you are a member of our gym you might find you just want to escape to the nearest gym to be alone and get your heart rate up to feel normal. The holiday workouts we send you are designed to be a little shorter, so in just 30 minutes, we can help you feel good and stay consistent with your training.

It is also worth checking out any local CrossFit gyms in the area – we are all very different, all shooting for the same goal, to give you the best hour of your day, keep you moving and improve your health, but we all have our very different ways of getting there. Depending on where you are, Drop in rates can be shockingly high, but if funds can extend to it I would definitely recommend just for the experience (and if you are anything like me, a new CrossFit T-Shirt at every opportunity)

If you are a member of our gym and would like some additional help and support through the summer to help you stay accountable and consistent, or if you are struggling to know what your goals are we are here to help. Book a goal review here and let us help you.

Also, don’t forget our member exclusive summer events; Beach WOD on the 23rd June and the Summer team comp on 14th July. For more info speak to one of our coaches or email me at [email protected]
