CrossFit vs. Hyrox – What’s the Difference and Which Is Right for You?

Over the last few years, both CrossFit and Hyrox have exploded in popularity—and for good reason. They’re both rooted in functional fitness, they both push you physically and mentally, and they both attract people who love a challenge. But while they may look similar from the outside, CrossFit and Hyrox have very different approaches when it comes to training style, structure, and purpose.

At CrossFit Structure, we’re proudly a CrossFit gym. We believe CrossFit’s methodology—constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity—is one of the most effective ways to build real strength, boost performance, and stay fit for life. That said, we’ve seen more and more people take an interest in Hyrox, including two of our own members, Emily and Philippa, who regularly compete in Hyrox events and represent our gym brilliantly.

Hyrox is designed as a fixed-format endurance race. The competition follows a set structure every time: eight workout stations, each separated by a 1km run. Movements include sled pushes, burpee broad jumps, rowing, lunges, and carries—all with a focus on sustained aerobic output and consistent pacing. The standardised format means Hyrox athletes know exactly what to expect, which makes it easy to train for and track progress over time.

CrossFit, by contrast, thrives on variety. No two workouts are the same. You might be lifting heavy barbells one day, running intervals the next, and mastering gymnastics or odd-object carries the day after. This variety is purposeful—it develops all aspects of fitness: strength, power, endurance, coordination, mobility, and agility. CrossFit isn’t about preparing for one specific race. It’s about preparing for anything. That means becoming more well-rounded, more adaptable, and ultimately more capable—in the gym and in everyday life.

One of the big differences lies in how competitions are structured. Hyrox is predictable. Everyone completes the same event, and the winner is the fastest across the course. CrossFit competitions are more diverse. They might include multiple events over several days, with tests of strength, speed, skill, and endurance. You never know what’s coming—which means training needs to develop everything.

If your goal is to be competitive in Hyrox, it makes sense to train for the Hyrox event format. Repeating those specific stations and building your aerobic base will absolutely help your performance on race day. But training only in Hyrox-style workouts can have its downsides. Without variation, you risk overuse injuries, burnout, or hitting plateaus.

This is where CrossFit becomes an incredible tool—even for Hyrox athletes. By including more diverse movement patterns, heavier lifting, and skills like Olympic weightlifting or gymnastics, CrossFit helps address imbalances, reduce injury risk, and keep training interesting. Many of the movements you’ll see in Hyrox—like sled pushes, rowing, wall balls, and burpees—are also regularly programmed into CrossFit workouts. And when combined with strength work, core development, and faster-paced interval sessions, they make for a powerful training mix.

At CrossFit Structure, we’ve even introduced a new Endurance class to support this kind of training. It’s lower skill, longer in duration, and focused more on cardio-based partner workouts—perfect for those looking to build aerobic capacity and mental grit without needing to master advanced barbell skills. It’s different from our main CrossFit class, but still delivers that same high-energy, community-driven feel we’re known for.

Ultimately, whether you lean toward CrossFit or Hyrox depends on what excites you most. But there’s a lot of value in blending the two. Generalising your training can actually enhance sport-specific performance. It keeps you mentally engaged and physically well-rounded—key ingredients for long-term consistency and progress.
