Scaling, Rx’d & Why You’re Not Behind

scaling

If you’ve ever looked at the whiteboard and thought,
“There is absolutely no way I can do that workout” — you’re not alone.

In fact, that thought is one of the most common things new members experience when starting CrossFit. And here’s the important bit:

👉 That doesn’t mean CrossFit isn’t for you.
👉 It means you’re exactly who it’s designed for.

At CrossFit Structure, one of the biggest things we help new members understand is that CrossFit is not about doing the workout exactly as written. It’s about doing the right version of the workout for you.

What Does “Rx’d” Actually Mean?

You’ll often see “Rx’d” written next to a workout. This simply means “as prescribed” — the workout written in its original form.

Here’s what Rx’d doesn’t mean:

  • It does not mean expected
  • It does not mean better
  • It does not mean the goal for everyone

Rx’d is a reference point, usually designed to challenge the fittest athletes in the gym. Most people — even very experienced members — scale most workouts.

And that’s exactly how it’s supposed to work.

What Is Scaling?

Scaling means adjusting the workout so you still get the same training effect, just at the right level for your current ability.

That might look like:

  • Using a lighter weight
  • Doing fewer reps
  • Shortening a distance
  • Changing a movement (for example, pull-ups to ring rows)
  • Slowing the pace or adjusting the time

The key thing to understand is this:

Everyone in the class is doing the same workout — just expressed differently.

Scaling Is Not a Step Back — It’s Smart Training

Some people worry that scaling means they’re “not good enough yet.” In reality, the opposite is true.

Scaling allows you to:

  • Move better
  • Build strength safely
  • Learn skills properly
  • Recover faster
  • Progress more consistently

Many of the strongest, fittest members in the gym scale regularly — because they’re training for long-term progress, not short-term ego wins.

What About Holding the Class Back?

This is a big fear for beginners, so let’s be very clear:

👉 You are never holding the class back.

Classes are coached, timed, and structured so everyone trains together — regardless of level. No one is waiting on you. No one is judging your weights. Everyone is focused on their own workout.

If anything, most members respect effort far more than performance.

The Coach’s Job (and Yours)

Your job:

  • Show up
  • Try your best
  • Ask questions

Our job as coaches:

  • Explain the workout clearly
  • Offer appropriate scaling options
  • Help you choose what’s right for you
  • Keep you moving safely and confidently

You’re never expected to figure it out alone.

The Takeaway

You don’t earn your place in the gym by lifting heavy or going Rx’d.
You earn it by showing up and doing the work that’s right for you.

And that’s more than enough.
