Staying on Track With Your Fitness Over Christmas

Christmas

Does your routine completely disappear over Christmas?

Between school holidays, work parties, family commitments, travel, and the general “we’ll sort it in January” mindset, Christmas is one of the hardest times of year to stay consistent with training.

Here at CrossFit Structure in Newmarket, we see this every December. Members worry they’ll lose progress, fall out of routine, or undo months of hard work in just a couple of weeks.

The good news?
You don’t need to train perfectly over Christmas — you just need a realistic plan.

Below are a few simple ways to stay on track with your fitness over the Christmas holidays while still enjoying the season.

1. Adjust Your Fitness Goals for Christmas

The first step is resetting expectations.

Ask yourself:

  • What do I realistically want to achieve between now and the New Year?
  • Is this a time to push… or simply maintain?

For most people, maintenance over Christmas is a huge win. Holding onto strength, fitness, movement quality, and routine during December puts you in a great position for January.

Your goal might be:

  • Maintaining consistency with 2–3 sessions per week
  • Keeping strength numbers steady
  • Working on a skill (pull-ups, double unders, gymnastics)
  • Staying pain-free and moving well

Once your goal is clear, we can work out how to achieve it around a busy Christmas schedule.

If your usual class time doesn’t work because the kids are off school or work hours change, look at alternative sessions. A different class time for a few weeks is far better than stopping altogether.

Remember — Christmas is temporary. Routine returns quickly.

2. Don’t Stress About Missed Workouts During the Holidays

Life happens at Christmas — and that’s OK.

Missing a session or two does not undo your progress. What matters is consistency over time, not perfection in December.

If you:

  • Miss a week
  • Can’t get to the gym
  • Are travelling or visiting family

.

As long as you have a recurring membership at CrossFit Structure, we’ll send you simple home or hotel workouts to help you stay consistent. These are short, effective, and designed to fit busy holiday schedules. (get your requests in before Friday 19th Dec to get your workouts sent to you in time)

3. Eating and Drinking at Christmas (Without Guilt)

Christmas is for enjoying food, drinks, and time with people you care about.

One meal, one day, or even one week does not ruin months of hard work.

Problems only arise when Christmas turns into:

“I’ll do nothing now and panic in January.”

Instead:

  • Enjoy meals
  • Enjoy drinks
  • Eat mindfully when you can
  • Keep training when possible

Fitness is built on what you do most of the year, not what happens between Christmas and New Year.

And when you’re back in the gym, we help you settle straight back into training — no judgement, no punishment workouts, just support.

4. Making Time to Train During the Christmas Break

For many of our Newmarket members, training is their switch-off time.

A short session, some movement, and getting your heart rate up can be exactly what you need during a busy, noisy holiday period.

The workouts we provide over Christmas — both in-gym and at home — are often shorter and more efficient, meaning even 30 minutes can:

  • Boost energy
  • Reduce stress
  • Improve mood
  • Help you feel “normal” again

If you’re travelling, it can also be fun to drop into another CrossFit gym. Every gym is different, but they all aim to give you a great hour of training. Drop-in rates can be high, but the experience (and the inevitable new CrossFit t-shirt) can be worth it.
We are only closed for 2 full days – make the most of our reduced hours and join a class – you might even get to meet some of our regular members from classes that you don’t usually attend!
